In order to
commemorate the Birth Centenary of Acharya J C Bose, Jagadis
Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS) was
conceptualized in 1958 and was inaugurated by Pandit
Jawaharlal Nehru. JBNSTS is an autonomous institute promoted
by Department of Higher Education Govt. of West Bengal.
In the last five
decades JBNSTS has grown to become a premiere institute of
non-formal science education in India and helps students to
realize the importance of excellence in the scientific world
and try to cultivate this in their own lives as students of
science.
With the
realization of the importance of hands-on experiments
towards the learning of basic sciences and inculcate
scientific spirit and culture of scientific research in the
minds of young high school and undergraduate students,
JBNSTS has set up its laboratory named "J.C.Bose Laboratory
for Science Through Experiments", with the initial financial
support from Bose Institute, Kolkata. The Laboratory was
inaugurated by Prof. Sibaji Raha, Director Bose Institute on
12th November 2010, soon after its birth, it has got the
recognition from Department of Scientific & Industrial
Research (DSIR) Govt. of India and enjoys the status of
Public Funded Research Institute (PFRI).
The
Laboratory's objective is to establish a world-class
facility to develop a creative and open research environment
for nurturing young innovative minds/scholars and conducting
scientific research to discover technological innovations
that directly contribute to Nation's development and
prosperity. The Laboratory is intended to become a magnet
for world-class research in India, a place where leading
Scholars/Scientist's from around the world can exchange
visions and ideas, foster innovations, and create
achievements with a significant social, scientific and
economic impact.
Students are allowed to plan and
carry out research work for their projects under the
guidance of different faculty members of JBNSTS and from
other institutions. During this session, students are
allowed to work independently / group with several
instruments such as, Source Measuring Unit, Metallurgical
Microscope, Biological Microscopes, Scanning Tunneling
Microscope, micro Centrifuge, UV-VIS, Spectrophotometer,
Millican Oil-drop Experimental setup etc.
In each camp, participating students are allowed to present
their experimental work in the Project Presentation session
before the panel of judges.
